Start Smart: A Therapist’s Guide to Building a Private Practice
A 5-Session Introductory Webinar to Building and Running a Private Practice
Wednesdays in July | 7:00-8:00pm
Five 60 minute virtual sessions
CLASS OFFERINGS
Most therapists graduate from graduate school and embark on a long pre-licensing period of agency work, group practice trials and tribulations, working fee for service, hustling for health insurance, trying to convince ourselves we sort of know what we’re doing, and living our lives in our spare time. Nowhere on that list of priorities is learning how to start a private practice.
It can be intimidating to leave the comfort and safety of a group – and a W2 – and start out on your own. It’s hard to know what’s actually needed and what’s optional, what to prepare for, and often, how to begin. This webinar will break down each major category of building and running a private practice, clarifying practical steps for you to consider, and offering resources to support you to make your own decisions about your business.

Instructor Information
Liz Graham, LCSW - Liz is a New York and New Jersey based therapist whose approach is informed by somatic methodologies, nervous system science, social justice, and degrees in psychology from Emory University and social work from NYU. Prior to working in private practice, she worked in schools, nonprofits, at an analytic institute, and group practices. Her bosses (and salaries) ranged from okay to pretty awful (maybe that sounds familiar?), but she felt intimidated and conflicted to go out on her own. She opened her own practice in 2021 and has not looked back! Luckily, she got a lot of support and cheerleading from some wise women who came before her, and hopes to pass some of this wisdom along to you! Liz sees clients virtually and in person, has been an assistant for Hakomi Somatic Psychotherapy trainings, and offers supervision to early to mid career therapists interested in deepening their clinical practice.
Emily Stuart, LCSW - Emily is a Brooklyn-based therapist in private practice and a parent. Maternal mental health is an area of focus in her practice, and she has experience collaborating and developing trainings with other clinicians to meet this unique need. Having navigated the complexities of parental leave herself—from accessing benefits through New York State to working with clinical issues that arise—she now offers individual consultation to support other therapists through the process.
